Coventry City Under-18s needed extra time to qualify for the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup against a strong AFC Bournemouth side.
James Maddison's double either side of Ben Stevenson's strike sealed the 3-2 win for the Sky Blues as City were pegged back twice.
Jason Farndon's attacking City line-up started the game at the Goldsands Stadium on the front foot. Only two minutes on the clock but James Maddison went close with a low, powerful effort which was well saved by Callum Stanton.
Stanton was kept on alert throughout the opening 20 minutes as the instrumental Maddison crossed for Sambou in the six-yard area but Ollie Harfield cleared in the 14th minute.
Two minutes later, Ben Stevenson found Jordan Shipley on the left side of the area but his shot was well blocked as City continued to press.
Stanton saved brilliantly to deny the lively Stevenson in the 21st minute before Shipley again found space on the left, but he curled over a minute later.
It wasn't all City though. Dion Kelly-Evans had to be alert to head away a Joe Quigley cross with Luke Holmes ready to tap home in the 37th minute.
Two minutes from half-time, City got the lead their pressure deserved. Maddison twisted and turned in the area which deceived Matt Butcher who fouled him. Maddison stepped up and found the left-hand corner.
The City bench were still celebrating as the home side equalised on the stroke of half-time when Jordan Lee broke through the City defence to slot home and level the game at the break.
The Sky Blues continued to dominate the game after the break as Maddison curled an impressive 30-yard effort wide in the 57th minute.
Frustration looked like it would begin to creep into City's play as five successive corners came without reward for City with 25 minutes remaining but City went ahead shortly after.
Stevenson, whose tireless work had kept City on the front foot for much of the game, fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area in the 71st minute.
It looked as though City would build on their lead but against the run of play, Jordan Lee once again burst into the area and fired home with just four minutes remaining.
George Thomas hit the side-netting with a minute remaining as the tie went into extra time.
The Sky Blues continued to dominate and made the pressure tell in the 104th minute. Stevenson showed bravery to win the ball in the middle of the park as Devon Kelly-Evans found Maddison in space to tuck home.
Provider almost turned scorer with 10 minutes off extra-time remaining as Devon Kelly-Evans found space 20-yards out but his curling effort hit the post.
The home side rallied in the final stages but City held out to seal their spot in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.
