MATCH REPORT: Coventry City 2-1 MK Dons - Sky Blues dig in for crucial win after brilliant defensive display

28 February 2015

City held on for large parts of the game after goals from Chris Stokes and Dominic Samuel secured a hard fought three points...

Coventry City recorded their first win since January with a wonderful defensive display against promotion hopefuls MK Dons.

First-half goals from Chris Stokes, on his home debut and Dominic Samuel gave City a valuable three points after defending for their lives in the second-half.

City took the lead after nine minutes when Luke Williams' corner was met by Stokes at the back post and after a deflection the ball cannoned in the far corner.

The Dons looked to keep the ball after the goal but City got the second just three minutes later, when John Fleck nicked the ball and drove towards the area, where he teed up the unmarked Samuel who smashed a shot in the bottom corner from ten-yards out.

Some expert defending kept the two goal lead intact when Matty Pennington cleared off the line after Daniel Powell got free in the box.

That was the end of a thoroughly entertaining half and Academy starlet George Thomas came on for his sixth appearance of the season for Williams.

The Dons came out dominant after the break and Marcus Tudgay stopped them scoring with a brilliant last ditch block to deny Anthony Kay in the six-yard box.

They got the goal their play merited when Carl Baker got to the byline from the left and found Powell in the area who poked an effort first time into the bottom right corner.

Nick Proschwitz then came on for his home debut replacing Tudgay as the Dons continued to dominate.

They should have equalised when substitute George Williams missed the ball at the back-post, before Will Grigg missed when well placed in the area.

The visitors monopolised the ball as City sat back but after four minutes of added time, City held on in a brilliant defensive display to secure their first win at home since October.
