"It’s all a similar style of football and it’s great for my professional integrity." - Coventry City's Lee Glover

The Sky Blues face a stiff test against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow but Glover is focused on the wider picture with the Under-21s...

Coventry City Under-21s coach Lee Glover is excited about the challenge ahead with the Sky Blues Development Squad.

Glover, whose background comes from non-league management and in similar roles at Championship Derby County and Burton Albion, took charge of the 21s back in October.

The former Nottingham Forest striker admitted that the standard of the Academy at the Sky Blues was part of the influence as to why he took the job and is looking forward to bridging the gap for Academy players to evolve into a first-team environment.

"Well working with the manager and coaching staff was a big draw," Glover explained.

“Also the standard of the Academy shows it is a good place for young players, lots have gone on to play in the first-team here and I want to continue that.

“Working with the management team here it’s a similar style to one I like and the one I worked with with Nigel Clough and Steve McLaren. It’s all a similar style of football and it’s great for my professional integrity - it’s a big bonus.

"I’ve been here since October and I’m loving it. It's a good place to come to work with great people in the building so I'm very happy."

The Sky Blues face Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow at the Alan Higgs Centre with kick-off at 1pm as City look to get back to winning ways.

He added: "It’s been a challenge so far, as a 21s squad we’ve been depleted with injuries had to push some 18s up. The 18s have been the real foundation for the 21s and to be fair to the 18s that have made the step up, they've done well but sometimes they need a breather and we have to look after them.

"My background is management at non-league level but I've dealt with player development in the upper age groups of the Academy so I know about players and dipping them in and out occasionally will benefit them. We’ve got some good lads at the club who want to do well, but we’ve got to be conscious of looking after them, particularly with a busy schedule.

"I want to bridge the gap between men’s football and Academy football, which involves playing at a higher intensity and dealing with different styles of play to make sure they cope in the first team environment.

“If I can get some of the players we've got at 18s and 21s and get them in the first team that’s my job really. I’m excited about the future and hope we can develop more players.”
