Coventry City midfielder Joe Cole has had his contract terminated with the Sky Blues ahead of a move abroad.

The former England international leaves by mutual consent ahead of the end of the 2015/16 League One season, to help facilitate the next leg of his career.

Cole moved to the Sky Blues on loan in November 2015 and signed for the club permanently in January, after he left Premier League side Aston Villa.

The former Chelsea man went on to make 22 appearances for the club, scoring two goals, including a match-winning 30-yard free-kick in the 4-3 win against Barnsley at the Ricoh Arena.

Sky Blues boss Tony Mowbray said: "I would like to place on record my personal thanks to Joe and everything he has done during his time with the club.

"He has been an excellent character to have around the football club through the season, and an exemplary example of how to be a professional footballer, both on the pitch and off it.

“We’ve been lucky to have a player in our ranks who has played in the Champions League, won the Premier League and won over 50 caps for his country. He’s professionalism towards the game has shown our young players exactly what it takes to reach the top level of the game.

“One of the first to arrive in the morning and never had an off-day in training, his impact on the club and the players around him has been excellent. He was determined to get himself in the right shape to play which shows his love and passion for the game, and for that reason, he is a perfect role model.

"He has also involved himself with the community aspects of the club and I'm sure everyone at the club and supporters would join me in wishing him all the best for the future."
