Coventry City captain Jim O’Brien is hoping that one more win will secure the Sky Blues’ League One status.
The Sky Blues were 1-0 winners over Colchester at the Ricoh Arena and the skipper got the only goal of the game in the first-half.
City missed plenty of chances to add to their tally but still secured the three points which leaves them in 16th place and three points above the drop-zone.
As a result, O’Brien is hopeful that a victory over Oldham on Tuesday night will be enough to stave off the threat of relegation and leave the Sky Blues looking up rather than down.
“It was a really important win today,” O’Brien said.
“We knew what they were about and the best way to beat them was a cut back, we worked on that in our pre-match and it was great to see the plan work on the pitch.
“We played really well in the first-half, there was one team in it and we made it a little bit difficult for ourselves and we ran out of steam a little bit. But we gave them chances and should’ve scored
more, so that’s disappointing but we’re delighted with an important three points.
“I think a victory against Oldham might be enough as it would put breathing space in between us and a few teams below us with the games running out. We’ll put the game-plan into action tomorrow and Monday and hopefully work towards another massive three points.”
O’Brien’s winner was a great finish as he found the net whilst off-balance from Chris Stokes’ pull-back.
That leaves the skipper on seven goals for the season although his first goal for the club was dubiously awarded as a Bobb Harris own-goal against Sheffield United back in August.
O’Brien is adamant he has seven goals but hopes that his winning strike can help the side turn the corner of a recent slump at home and stand them in good stead in the crucial four games remaining.
He continued: “I’m definitely on seven! People try to take goals away from me! It’s nice to be up there and nice to get a goal but we probably could’ve been 3-0 up.
“We just know it’s important to get a bit of home form going particularly at this late stage. If you can’t win games at home you’re going to be struggling but we need to make this a difficult place for
teams to come and hopefully we’ve turned a corner.”
