The Sky Blues skipper hailed his strike at the Banks's Stadium as the best goal of his career...

Coventry City captain Jim O'Brien said that his strike against Walsall was the best of his career to date.

The Sky Blues midfielder picked the ball up from 30-yards at the Banks's Stadium and looped the ball right into the far top-hand corner and believes it helped settle the team down in the 2-0 victory in the Midlands derby.

"It was a worldie!" O'Brien said.

"It bounced up really nicely for me so I couldn't have not hit it. After I stuck it I believed it was going in, I've hit a few from a similar range and hit the bar and the 'keeper has saved them but it's just one of those things.

"It was a great hit, I'm absolutely delighted with it. It's definitely the best goal of my career! I think it helped to settle us down after the penalty and we played really well on Saturday."

The Scot was full of praise for the side after the victory over the Saddlers, in particular a young back-four whose average age was just 20.

Despite the result, O'Brien is eager for his team-mates to take it one game at a time, but admitted that the new year has brought a new confidence to the Sky Blues.

The 27-year old continued: "Everyone seemed to be on it on Saturday and special credit to our young back four. It's not ideal with Andy coming out of the warm-up through illness so credit must go to Aaron Phillips who came in late and played really well. The two centre-halves played with real maturity too, I thought they were outstanding.

"At half-time we totally forgot about the penalty we were playing so well, it calmed Marcus down a bit but he's a good professional stuck to his job and lead the line very very well.

"He showed experience, held it up and it's really important for guys like myself playing behind him for him to hold it up and bring us into play. Simeon complemented him really well and it was one of those days that everything you work on comes together.

"We're confident, the new year is a fresh start for everyone and we need to kick-on now. The staff and manager work really hard on team shape and things like that, despite the Walsall result we have to ensure we don't get too far ahead of ourselves."
