Coventry City Under-18s coach Jason Farndon has confirmed the club will assess the extent of Ben Stevenson's injury later this week after his 'outstanding' performance in the FA Youth Cup.

The Sky Blues clinched their place in the second round of the FA Youth Cup after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Peterborough Northern Star at Nuneaton Town's Liberty Way last night.

James Maddison notched an impressive brace with Kyle Spence adding a third as the young Sky Blues were guilty of missing several chances to extend the scoreline.

After the game live on Sky Blues Player, Farndon praised his team's efforts and revealed he used Nuneaton Town's recent loss in the FA Cup as an example to be wary of an upset.

Farndon said: "It's a great result and delighted to be in the hat for the next round. It could have been by a much greater margin as I'd be frightened to see how many shots we had tonight but not enough of them were on target.

"It wasn't about how many we could put past them though, it was about getting through. We used Nuneaton as an example as they went to Hemel Hempstead and lost in the FA Cup the other night so we knew we had to be at our best tonight.

"We wanted to respect them as they've done really well to get to this round but we wanted to stamp our authority on the game and show what we're about. I think as the game went on, we made the difference between the two sides tell.

"They had a go and they were difficult to beat. They played without a striker at times and sat very deep so it was a different challenge for the lads who needed to be patient tonight and they showed that maturity."

However, City ended the game with ten-men as having made all three substitutions, the impressive Ben Stevenson was the victim of a heavy challenge from Northern Star's Dan Bull in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Farndon praised Stevenson's performance prior to the injury and has also praised the attitude of captain James Maddison who dropped down to the Under-18s having recently been involved with the first-team.

He added: "The team were brilliant but I thought Ben Stevenson was outstanding. We're just a little bit worried now as he came off with an injury from a really nasty tackle; really disappointed with that tackle.

"It looks like a bad injury but we've got to get it assessed in the morning. It looks like his ankle at the moment but we'll get it properly looked over tomorrow. I also thought Jacob Whitmore was outstanding and another plus is we've got two Under-16s' on the pitch tonight.

"James Maddison just gives his all in every game he plays in, no matter what level it is at. He was bitterly disappointed for me taking him off when he was on a hat-trick but that's what you want to see.

"Two great goals from him and he was a real leader tonight. No preference to who we get in the next round whether that be Nantwich or Rochdale. We return to the league on Saturday and that will be our main focus now."
