Coventry City Under-18's coach Jason Farndon was delighted to see his side progress to the third round of the FA Youth Cup.

The Sky Blues put in an excellent display as they beat Rochdale 4-3 at Spotland to progress into the next round, where they will face Bournemouth at the Goldsands Stadium.

Farndon was pleased with his team's display in their first match for two-and-a-half weeks and says the young Sky Blues could have won by a bigger margin.

"We're delighted to go through," Farndon said.

"We worked hard and towards the end you could tell we hadn't played for two-and-a-half weeks so we were rusty.

"I think we should have won by a bigger margin, the scoreline flatters them but to be fair to them they had a right go at us but it was a great result.

"That's the first time we've played 4-4-2 this season, we've worked on it in training but there's nothing quite like it in the game. The attitude and application we expect from the team was brilliant as usual, there were some excellent performances.

"The Academy categories are thrown out of the window in the Cup, but they're flying in a similar vein to us with players in the first-team so it was a great win for us."

The Sky Blues played a strong line-up at Spotland, with James Maddison returning to the side and Ben Stevenson also coming back from an injury lay-off.

Farndon was full of praise for the duo who combined in centre-midfield and is hoping to push more of his players in and around the first-team picture.

He added: "Ben Stevenson was outstanding, it was his first game out for a month and he is another top prospect - one that we will be pushing in and around the first-team.

"The gaffer knows the players personally and as he has said before we have big squad of players that train with the first-team and we will continue push them on.

"James Maddison returned tonight and he shows that attitude week-in week-out. He loves football and is a real leader, he's not necessarily vocal but he always leads by example  in everything he does and takes great pride on and off the pitch.

"We're going to work tactically on 4-4-2 ahead of the Barnsley game, we'll put a lot of work on that with the games are coming thick and fast and that's great for the boys."
