"I want to establish myself as a starting player this year, hopefully I can use pre-season to impress." Coventry City's James Maddison

The Sky Blues midfielder is keen to learn Tony Mowbray's philosophy and believes the pre-season matches will help the team gel...

Coventry City's James Maddison is eager to use pre-season as a platform in order to establish himself as a first-team regular.

Maddison played 45 minutes in City's pre-season opener against Nuneaton and went the closest for the Sky Blues, hitting a beautiful free-kick which hit the bar but looked like it bounced over the line.

After a good workout at Liberty Way, the 18-year old was disappointed with the result but believes that the fitness will be crucial as the Sky Blues squad continues to gel.

"That first game is always tough, it's good to get it out of the way and into your legs," Maddison said.

"The result could've been better but it's our first game, we're gelling with the new signings and a new way of playing. I'm pleased to get 45 minutes and I look forward to the upcoming games.

"I thought the free-kick was in, people are telling me it went over the line! I raised my arms but it's only pre-season so it didn't have any cost. It would have been nice but at this stage its all about minutes and getting that match fitness.

"I want to establish myself as a starting player this year, hopefully I can use pre-season to show everyone what I'm about and give myself a platform to hopefully start for Coventry City."

Maddison has enjoyed pre-season so far under Tony Mowbray, who is still instilling his style of play into the players.

The Academy graduate is eager to learn Mowbray's attacking philosophy and believes he will enjoy the new style when the players keep progressing under the manager.

He added: "Today I played on the left of a three, me and the Trialist interchanged so I found myself in the number ten role regularly. That's the position I most like to get in, between their midfield and defence on the turn.

"I've only ever known Steven Pressley so this is my first time in a first team envioronment with a new manager. It's different and I'm enjoying it, the manager is trying to drill his philosophy into us and how he wants to play. I like the way he sees the game, it's an attacking way and it's how I enjoy playing.

"We're working hard on the training pitch to make it work and the pre-season fixtures are a good chance for us to put what we do in training onto the pitch."
