"It's a big club, we need consistency to challenge at the top of the table." - Coventry City's Jack Stephens

The 22-year old admits he was attracted to the club by the prospect of promotion from League One...

Coventry City's new loan signing Jack Stephens was attracted to the club for the manager Tony Mowbray's philosophy.

The 22-year old centre-back signed a Deadline Day loan deal with the club until the end of the season from Premier League side Southampton.

Stephens had a loan spell with Championship side Middlesbrough this season and previously impressed during a Swindon Town loan spell last season.

The England Under-21 defender admits he is excited by the move to the Sky Blues and hopes to be part of a promotion story this season.

Stephens said: "I'm excited to join the club and to get some games at the top end of League One.

"It's a big club with a big stadium. Obviously, the last few years have been really tough for the club but this season has been really good so far.

"I looked at the table and the club is sitting 5th right now so I want to be part of that in what should be a big end to the season.

"It's all about digging in really. There will be times when we don't get the right result but we've got to stick together and make sure we get the consistency needed to challenge at the top."

Stephens made 41 appearances for the Sky Blues during his season-long loan spell with the Robins, scoring one goal.

Swindon got to the play-offs during the 2014/15 season and Stephens believes the spell helped him progress as a footballer.

He added: "I really enjoyed myself at Swindon and we had a really good season there, and it definitely helped me in my progression as a footballer.

"We played some good football at Swindon and that's one of the things I want to do here. I spoke to the manager before I came and I like the philosophy.

"I like to think I'm a ball-playing centre-back but first things first, I've got to defend. I do get on the ball and step into midfield as it's important from the back."
