'I don't know the secret' - Wilson

2 September 2013

Coventry City striker Callum Wilson doesn't know the secret behind his form during the 2013/14 season...

Coventry City striker Callum Wilson is enjoying his goal-scoring form in the 2013/14 League One season, but admits he doesn't know the secret behind it.

The 21-year old has been in prolific form this season with him currently the top-scorer in League One and joint top-scorer in the Football League, tied only with Huddersfield Town's James Vaughan on six goals.

The Sky Blues have now scored 18 goals this season in all competitions and were unlucky not to seal the win against Shrewsbury with both Billy Daniels and Franck Moussa going close in the final five minutes.

The Coventry-born striker started his pre-season two weeks early during the summer, and he believes that has had a great impact on his current form.

Wilson said: "I actually don't know the secret behind my form. I think that I have started believing in myself this season and that can have huge impact.

"Also, I have had a full pre-season without any injury problems which really helps. I am playing week-in, week-out which is making me fitter with each game and the style of play we have means that it is great for strikers to play in as you always know you are going to get a chance.

"I came in two weeks early to do some work with Pete Tierney (Fitness Coach) and make sure I was ready for the season as I knew it was a big season for me.

"I think the extra work I did in pre-season is paying off. The team are really confident at the moment so when the whole team are playing well, it means it is much easier for strikers like me to score."

There is no doubt Wilson's biggest attribute is his pace but during this season, he has also added strength and power to his game which means his hold-up play is vital to the way Coventry play.

Despite his impressive start to the season, Wilson is still hoping to improve and keep impressing the City fans throughout the season.

He added: "I am not going to reveal my goals target but I am getting close to where I want to be. I still think there is plenty of work to do going forward and hopefully I can keep my current form up.

"Playing next to Leon Clarke has been particularly good for me as I can learn from him and he understands the way I play which makes us an effective partnership.

"I could have scored a few more against Shrewsbury and that has been the case with every game this season. I may have scored six already but I think I could have scored more.

"I heard the fans singing my name throughout the game and that was great for me. I am from Coventry so to hear my name being sung out, you can't get better than that."
