'I almost shredded Wilson's contract'

Steven Pressley recalls a particular moment in pre-season he could have torn up Callum Wilson's contract...

Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has admitted he 'could have shredded Callum Wilson's contract' during a pre-season match against TSV Wachtendonk.

The Coventry-born striker has been in sensational form this season, becoming the top-scorer in the Football League yesterday with a brace to take him on to eight goals.

Wilson featured during the pre-season tour of Holland in preparation for the new season and City boss Steven Pressley recalls a moment where he might have regretted giving him a new deal.

Pressley said: "His form has been sensational and it is simply down to hard work from him.  He has a better understanding of his strengths and his weaknesses now which is very important as we see him play to his strengths now.

"He is making us all incredibly proud at the moment. I am disappointed for him as he missed out on Player of the Month but he responded really well against Colchester, exactly the right attitude.

"He has come a long way in a very short period of time. I remember, during a pre-season match against TSV Wachtendonk, I brought him on in second half.

"If I had his contract there and then, I would have shredded it. I wanted to bring him off after 10 minutes. But now, he is playing so well.

"I am really pleased for him as he has had his injury problems which can be difficult to take in the early stages of your career. There is definitely more to come from him."

John Fleck has also received a lot of praise from the City faithful this season after his conversion to the central midfield position.

The City boss continued, explaining how Fleck has adapted his game and how he is benefiting from consistent game-time.

He added: "I've looked at his qualities and strengths, and he is a player who will take on the ball in tight situations which makes him ideal in central midfield.

"He is a player who has so much ability and he is really starting to benefit from consistent game-time. His passing is second-to-none in this league and he adds so much value to that midfield.

"He is now one of our our best without the ball. The pressurises the game, he has got so much energy and his second phase play is brilliant.

"We have so many great qualities in our side at the moment and John is just one of them."
