'I could have looked a fool' - Baker

15 January 2014

City skipper delighted that his acrobatic overhead kick against Oldham resulted in the award for December Goal of the Month

Sky Blues skipper Carl Baker is targeting a successful 2014 after scoring a wonder goal to end 2013.

His goal was City’s last of 2013 against Oldham, which also grabbed him December’s Goal of the Month award.

Baker met Cyrus Christie’s cross with an acrobatic overhead kick for the equaliser at Sixfields, leaving the home fans purring.

The club captain said of the goal: “I only had one thing in my mind, I wasn’t sure if it was going to come off or not if I’m totally honest but as soon as it left my foot it felt like it was going towards the goal.

“I honestly didn’t know if it went in or not until I heard all the fans cheering and seeing the lads jumping on me.”

The Sky Blues midfielder made the strike look so natural, it left fans wondering whether he has been practicing the technique, but he says that is not the case: “I haven’t really scored a goal like that before, I’ve scored a couple of good goals, especially this season as well, but that’s definitely one of my better goals.

“I’m glad it came off as I could of looked like a fool if it hadn’t.”

Whilst the City captain scored the last goal of 2013, he also started off this year with a brace against Rotherham.

Baker hopes they are just the first goals of many this calendar year: “I started off really well with two goals in the first game of 2014 against Rotherham.

“That goal was from my own half, which sets the standard even higher, but I’ll try my best to score more between now and the end of the season.

“I want to play in as many games as I can, remain injury free and chip in with a few more goals, obviously the more spectacular the better.”

Baker is naturally, as captain, is thinking about the team aims as well as his own, including where the team wants to finish.

He said: “We want to get up to the play-off spots. I believe this squad is good enough and the gaffer is fantastic and I’m sure he believes we can do that.

“We don’t want to now see the season out in vain, we want to have something to show for it come the end of the season.

“We will be working hard every day on the training pitch which will hopefully get us up the table.”
