The Welsh Under-19 international talks about his time so far and hopes for the future with Coventry City here...
Coventry City forward George Thomas spoke exclusively to match-day programme PUSB shortly before the season ended.
Now that the club have confirmed Thomas has agreed terms for his professional deal, we thought we'd relive the interview so Sky Blues fans can get an insight into the latest crop of talents emerging from the Academy - starting with the Welsh Under-19 international!
How did you feel when you were offered a professional deal?
It was incredible and an unforgettable moment. I was in the room with my dad when I was told and I don't usually see much emotion from my dad but he gave the old trusty handshake and then I called my mum who was absolutely delighted.
Obviously, having made a few first-team appearances, I thought I might be getting one but you never really know until you're in the room and anything can happen so it was a huge relief to me and I can just push forward now.
How long have you been at the club and how did joining the Academy come about?
I've been at the club since I was six. I was playing in a tournament in Hinckley for my Sunday league team and Graham Brown, the scout for the club at the time came up to me and I was offered a trial straight away.
I came down to the club soon after and I never left. The club kept inviting me back year after year and I kept improving so I've never looked back. Obviously, I'm from Leicester but this does feel like home to me now as everyone has been brilliant during my time at the club.
Any inspirations/influential figures?
Plenty. Firstly, the main one has to be my Grandad. He was the one who got me into football and took me to play for the first time so he was a huge influence on my life and it's important I never forget that.
My Mum and Dad have spent a lot of time taking me to football and without their help, none of it would have been possible. Steve Simms was the first coach at the Academy to play me as a striker and Gregor Rioch and Richard Stevens have been huge influences.
Steven Pressley was the last major influence on me as he believed in me and really tried to push on my game over the last two years.
How would you describe yourself as a player to fans who maybe don't know much about you?
I like to link the play and bring others into it with the possession on the floor. I like to press the ball high up the pitch and defend from the front as both sides of the game are important.
Obviously, I want to score goals as well but it's always important to set other players up and create positions for others to exploit.
What has your year been like with the Academy?
It's been incredibly challenging, physically and mentally, but extremely rewarding. I've played across three different teams this year and got a lot of minutes under my belt which has been great for my experience.
I'll probably never have another year like it as I'll never play across three teams again so I know I'll be able to stand up to any challenge which comes my way in the future.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
To get as many first-team minutes as possible and impress the manager as much as possible during pre-season to be involved and help fire Coventry forward.
I'd love to be part of a successful team here though and be part of a team which achieves success in this league.
