'Elliott's played his way into the fold'

City boss Robins says Elliott's toil on the training pitch has put him back in the fold

Coventry City boss Mark Robins said striker Stephen Elliott has played his way back into his thoughts after bringing him on as a substitute in the 1-1 home draw with Preston.

Elliott had previously made just three appearances under Robins, his last in October in the 1-0 away win over Leyton Orient, but the City gaffer said his recent performances on the club's Ryton training pitch had earned him an opportunity to play his way back into the manager's matchday thoughts.

"Stephen has done well in training this week, really well. He's come back into the fold and deserved his opportunity," Robins said.

Elliott was very nearly the hero in the stalemate with the Lilywhites when his header two minutes from time crashed against the crossbar after he had been brought on to replace Adam Barton.

"He was really unlucky today because he had a real good chance to win the game for us and I'd have backed him to do it but I think the 'keeper's put him off a bit.

"I feel a bit sorry for him actually because it's his old club and it would've been a day to remember for him."
