The City coach also refused to single out the returning James Maddison for special praise after the brilliant 'team performance'...

Coventry City professional development coach Dave Hockaday has lauded the Under-21s' performance at Ipswich Town as 'outstanding'.

The City Under-21s were the dominant side at Portman Road as George Thomas' second-half strike proved the difference between the two sides.

The Sky Blues had plenty of chances in the game which saw James Maddison complete 60 minutes on his return to action from a back injury.

Hockaday, who saw his record their second win in three games, called the performance a 'footballing lesson' and says Tony Mowbray was impressed with what he saw.

The City coach said: "In regards to a Development game, at times, we were pretty sensational, if not outstanding. The passing, the movement, the link-play and the playing out from the back is exactly what we want to see.

"I'm very proud of the players today and I know the manager, who has been sitting up there watching from the stands, was particularly pleased with what he saw.

"We gave them a footballing lesson tonight. It is a performance to cherish and set our standards upon and then we move on as we're back in training tomorrow.

"There were so many good performances across the pitch and we've prepared properly today which shows the value of good preparation."

Blair Turgott also completed 60 minutes after his match-winning goal against Peterborough United on Saturday at the Abax Stadium.

Hockaday refused to single out Maddison for special praise on his return and believes the Sky Blues should have added more goals to the scoreline.

He added: "James Maddison did well on his return but I think it would be really unfair to single out any one performance tonight as the team effort was outstanding.

"The pitch was brilliant and I think the players enjoyed playing at a stadium like Portman Road. The first-half, we were outstanding and the result doesn't flatter us.

"Maybe there is a slight disappointment we didn't score more goals as there were times in the game when we were creating chances at will and we need to develop a ruthlessness in front of goal.

"At the end, we needed to show a determination to get the result we deserved and the defence stood up to the test. All in all, a really good day."
