Coventry City Under-21s coach Darren Murray has bemoaned the lack of goals in the Under-21s team after the 1-0 loss to Birmingham City.

The Under-21s suffered a narrow defeat at Ryton training ground thanks to Liam Truslove header in the first-half.

The Sky Blues had chances to get level in the game but a team featuring Shaun Miller and Danny Swanson failed to get level against the Blues.

Murray believes it is a testing time for the players' character and wants to see a response from the squad.

Murray said: "It is a problem going right through the club at the moment and that is we aren't scoring enough goals. There was a few times today when we got into good positions but didn't choose the right option.

"Like everybody else, we want to win games of football and we're on a bad run but we can't afford to feel sorry for ourselves. It was disappointing to come out of the game without scoring.

"I'd have liked to see a bit more from some players today. You need to go home knowing that you can look in the mirror and say you've given your all.

"They've got to do it themselves and it is a testing time for the character. It is a make or break situation and they've got to respond."

The Under-21s finished the game with five Under-18s players on the pitch having played in the 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

Murray was full of praise for the young players who stepped up, especially first-year scholar Callum Maycock.

He added: "I think Callum Maycock has been brilliant over the past few weeks and each time he has stepped up into the Under-21s, he has looked assured which is great to see.

"We're beginning to see some of those first-year scholars evolve which is great to see and Ben Stevenson once again showed what he is about.

"The likes of Cian, Devon, Ben and Jordan Shipley all played on Saturday for the Under-18s so it is tough on them but they like to play football and you can see that.

"It's a testing time for everyone at the moment but we've got to roll our sleeves up and go again."
