MATCH REPORT: Coventry City U-21s 0-1 Leeds United - Young Sky Blues suffer defeat at the Sky Blue Lodge

27 April 2015

A tight match ended in defeat for the Young Sky Blues, despite James Maddison hitting the crossbar and the post in the first half...

Coventry City Under 21s slipped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at Ryton training ground. Despite playing well they lost out to a first-half Robbie McDaid strike.

Leeds had a chance in the first 20 seconds. Robbie McDaid capitalised on a loose throw in but shot straight at Reice Charles-Cook.

City nearly took the lead on the fifth minute. James Maddison smashed a free kick towards goal, but keeper Daniel Atkinson tipped the shot into the crossbar.

The Whites then went up the other end and Luke Booker found himself one-on-one, but Booker teed his shot wide of the goal.

Midway through the half, Maddison went close again, his shot from the edge of the area was deflected onto the post and into the hands of Atkinson.

Leeds took the lead after half an hour. A mistake by the trialist let McDaid in, and he finished low and into the corner past the dive of Charles-Cook.

That was the last action of a frustrating first half where City had their chances but fell behind to a clinical Leeds goal.

Just before the hour mark, the Whites nearly doubled their lead. A ball was slipped through to Brooker but his shot was brilliantly turned onto the post by Charles-Cook.

With twenty to play Blair Turgott was clean through on goal after a route one kick from Charles-Cook, but the keeper stood his ground and saved well.

City were doing their best to get back into things but they were finding a tough Whites defence hard to break down.

Eight minutes from time a stinging drive from tested Atkinson but he was fortunate to deflect the ball clear.

Bassala Sambou was clean through in the last minute after a wonderful ball from Callum Maycock but his shot was tame and at the keeper.

City had one last chance as a neat passing move again found Sambou, but his shot from ten yards went agonisingly over the bar.

The referee called time soon after, it was a tough defeat for City who probably did enough to get something from the game.
