"This season's been interesting. We've developed first team players and gone on a cup run." - Coventry City Under-18s manager Jason Farndon

Farndon believes the league table does not do his squad justice as he reflects on a campaign where the young Sky Blues finished 4th and played Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup…

Coventry City Under-18s manager Jason Farndon believes that the young Sky Blues have had an 'interesting' season, but laments the fact that the squad could not challenge for the Professional Development League Two North title.

Farndon's side finished fourth overall, but went on an FA Youth Cup run that went all the way to the fourth round and an exit by finalists Manchester City.

The manager is happy though with the development of the players in his spell so far in charge, particularly with the likes of George Thomas and James Maddison now featuring regularly in the first team.

"Overall this season has gone reasonably well", he said. "We started off great but petered out towards the end.

"We sort of ran our race at Christmas, the boys played too many games and it caught up on them.

"We had a good cup run, one of the better ones the club has had in recent times, and the production of players into the first team with the likes of Maddison and Thomas is very pleasing.

"If I had to sum it up in one word I would say.. interesting. We had high hopes for the season and I do believe that if the strongest squad would have been available all the time then we would have won the league.

"But I have to be realistic, that my job is to produce players for the first team. With 6 or 7 of them making debuts this season, it has been a great personal achievement.

"I think that the league table doesn't do us justice, our style of football has been excellent at times and there have been games where we have been going into games with ten fit players."

Farndon believes that his side never really got back into the style of play that saw them top the league early on in the season and beat the likes of Championship table-toppers Bournemouth in the FA Youth Cup.

He also feels that the fans are starting to see the best of Maddison in the first, with Farndon having seen the potential of the 18-year old first hand from an early age.

He continued: "We have had lots of exciting players featuring for us this campaign.

"Everything was clicking for us early on and we were brushing teams aside. The Bournemouth win was in my mind the performance of the season.

"We got a lot of plaudits after that game and rightly so. But we could never quite get back to that level.

"With James coming through now fans are starting to see the best of him. Time will tell how good he can be but he is a real talent."
