Former Sky Blues to star in charity match for Coventry homeless charity
A host of former Coventry City favourites, including current interim first-team boss Manager Lee Carsley will dust down their boots in order to raise funds for the Coventry Cyrenians homeless charity.
David Busst from Sky Blues in the Community has put together a side with players from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s to take on a combined Coventry Sphinx and Cyrenians select XI at the Coventry Sphinx Siddeley Avenue ground, on Friday 1st March, kicking off at 7.30pm.
Carsley will be joined by David Busst, 1987 cup final heroes Steve Orgrizovic, Dave Bennett and Mickey Gynn - along with Marcus Hall, Ray Woods, Paul Culpin, Paul Hall, Craig Pead, Barry Quinn and Steve Morgan. The former Sky Blues favourites will also be joined by fellow ex-professionals Gavin O’Toole, David Titterton and Terry Angus.
The Coventry Cyrenians charity, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, provides a range of services to homeless, vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Sky Blues in the Community Manager David Busst said “We are delighted to be able to support the fantastic work of the Cyrenians charity by getting some ex-players involved in the event. Supporting organisations and causes like this is a great way of demonstrating the club’s commitment to the local community.”
The match coincides with the announcement of a successful Sky Blues in the Community bid to the Big Lottery to deliver a football and health awareness programme for adult men. The funding will see free football sessions delivered at venues across the city for the next five years – with the community scheme running a weekly session specifically for homeless men, or those living in sheltered accommodation.
Busst added: “We have already spoken with Coventry Cyrenians about collaborating on our Big Lottery funded ‘InFom’ project, and we are very much looking forward to working together to contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of these vulnerable members of our community.”
Tickets for the game cost £5 on the gate, with all proceeds from ticket and raffle sales going to the Coventry Cyrenians charity fundraising efforts.
