City Ladies star grabs GOLD in Russia

Courtney Sweetman-Kirk helped the GB Women's Football team win Gold at the Universiade...

Coventry City Ladies star Courtney Sweetman-Kirk grabbed Gold at the World University Games after the GB Women's Football team beat Mexico in the final.

Sweetman-Kirk, who helped City win the Birmingham FA County Cup last season, enjoyed a terrific tournament, finishing 4th in the top-goalscorers list with five goals.

The GB team progressed into the quarter-finals after finishing second in their group behind Japan, recording wins over Brazil and Estonia.

They faced Ireland in the quarter-finals where they recorded an impressive 8-0 victory, with Sweetman-Kirk scoring a hat-trick.

After a second victory over Brazil, beating them 1-0 in the semi-finals, the GB team secured a brilliant 6-2 victory in the final after scoring four goals in the last 10 minutes. 

Sweetman-Kirk tweeted a picture with the gold medal after the match and thanked fans for their support: "So proud to be part of #WUGSGB women's football. Gold medal winners! Have no words right now! Everything we deserved #OneTeam.

"Big thank you for all the people who been kind enough to send myself & the team messages throughout the games. Really has helped!



"Also big shout out to all the staff making it work for us behind the scenes.

"1 Gold medal, 4th top goalscorer in the tournament, 1 hat-trick...the feeling of being a gold medal winner& being in an amazing team #priceless."
