'The hard work will be worth it' - Akpom

27 February 2014

The Arsenal loanee is also looking forward to linking up with Nathan Delfouneso during his time with City...

Coventry City's on-loan striker Chuba Akpom has revealed he is hoping to use his time at the Sky Blues to gain more first-team experience.

The 18-year old returns to training with the City squad today after a short period back with the Gunners to play in the FA Youth Cup and the UEFA Youth League.

Akpom played the full 90 minutes in both victories over Charlton Athletic and Shakhtar Donetsk as his focus returns to League One action this weekend.

Speaking after the defeat to Carlisle United, the Arsenal loanee believes City's style of football can help develop his game.

Akpom said: "I'm feeling really positive about my move to Coventry and the squad has really welcomed me to the club.

"I saw that the manager really wanted to bring me in here which is great as it gives me confidence. There are a lot of young players here getting game time so that's what you want really.

"If I can get as many starts as possible, then that will give me some valuable experience. When I was at Brentford, I worked really hard in training but they're flying at the moment so it was difficult to get into the team.

"It is high-pressing style here which is good as we will get the ball back much higher up the pitch and therefore create more chances.

"It might be hard work but if it means we win games and score goals, then it is worth it."

Akpom is in contention to start against Shrewsbury Town as well as Callum Wilson, who is set to return to the City squad after completing 45 minutes for the Under-21s side this week.

City are also hopeful Nathan Delfouneso will return from a groin injury and Akpom is looking forward to linking up with the former England Under-21s international.

He added: "I've watched a lot of Nathan in the Premier League so I think it will be really good for me to link up with him.

"I'll be able to learn a lot by playing with him and I'm sure he'll be able to give me some good advice on how to play the position.

"He's a really nice guy and I'm really getting along with him. There are a lot of good players here and you can tell the side create a lot of chances.

"The side have scored a lot of goals this season so hopefully I can add to it."
