Coventry City defender Chris Stokes has admitted he is aiming for promotion after agreeing to sign a new one-year deal with the club.
The 24-year old impressed manager Tony Mowbray during his loan spell with the club last season and was eager to sign after a hectic summer which saw the former Forest Green defender get married.
Stokes, who was ever-present for City since he signed his initial loan deal back in March, believes that under Tony Mowbray’s guidance, promotion has to be the target for the squad this season.
“It was very nice to get the deal done,” Stokes said.
“It was such a hectic few weeks with the wedding and the honeymoon but I’m obviously really pleased to get it done.
“It’s been a crazy summer, I haven’t had any time to settle down but I cannot wait to get back and get my head down.
“The aim has to be promotion. Looking at the league there’s no massive stand out team, obviously you never know what can happen as teams can sign anyone and in pre season everyone works each other out, but we have to aim for promotion there’s no doubt about that.”
That aim is something Stokes believes is realistic under Mowbray, who he believes helped to improve his game during the short time the pair had together.
Now, with a full season under the new manager, Stokes wants to improve his game further and make the most of the opportunity of playing League One football once again.
He continued: “People don’t realise I hadn’t played for three months before I joined and thought I was fully fit. It isn’t an excuse, but I was nowhere near it! I got straight into it, playing Saturday Tuesday, thankfully I got through it adrenaline!
“Everyone was hoping that Tony would stay on and I’m obviously delighted that he has.
“Even when you go through the youth team or are close to retirement, you learn new things all the time from different coaches, it’s not as simple as finding the back of the net, there are different ways of doing so. I learned a lot with my short time with the gaffer, he took took my game to a different level in just a couple of months, so hopefully with a full season under him, he can help me take my game on even further.”
