Coventry City first team pool together fines money to donate to Grace Research Fund and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research
The Coventry City first team having pooled together their fines money collected over the 2013/14 season and donated £700 to two charities.
The City players have been operating a fines system to keep order at the club's Ryton training ground which means flip flops in the shower, training kit left outside and jumpers left in the gym are just a taste of offences which have been hitting them in the pocket.
Club captain Carl Baker said though it was all worthwhile if it meant being able to donate the money raised to two worthy causes.
Grace Research Fund, the club's shirt sponsor for the 2013/14 season, is based at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire and researches the causes of premature births and the best forms of neonatal care.
They will receive £400 from the players who are also donating the remaining £300 to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, a charity close to Baker's heart after his older brother Mike passed away from leukaemia aged 33 while his younger brother Dean is in remission.
Baker said: "The lads got together and decided to donate the money to two really worthy causes because it's a great feeling to be able to help two really important charities.
"Grace Research Fund have gotten behind us all year and we really appreciate the support and it's a fantastic charity.
"Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research is something a bit closer to my heart but the lads supported me in the decision.
"Fines are a bit of fun but if we can raise money to give something back then it's great. The lads get fined for all sorts and sometimes it's impossible to keep up because they like to stitch each other up for banter but at the end of the day it's raising money for a good cause so it's all good from everybody's point of view and hopefully we can do it again next year."
When asked who were the biggest contributors to the fund, Baker quickly pointed out that defender Jordan Clarke and midfielder Franck Moussa got the most visits to pay in their fine money.
"They have been getting fined left, right and centre. I try and give them heads up, let them know a fine's coming their way but they don't car,e they just take the fine. But they take it in good fair play and they always pay up when asked so fair play to them."
