City fans give generously to charity Beating Bowel Cancer
Coventry City and away fans gave an amazing £328 to the charity Beating Bowel Cancer at Good Friday’s match against Doncaster.Fans were by greeted at the Ricoh Arena’s gates by charity workers wearing shorts embossed with a cheeky bare bottom to get more people talking about the disease during April’s Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
Beating Bowel Cancer is encouraging those affected by the condition to join their ‘Bowel Movement’ which is encouraging people to help beat the disease by taking action and doing one of four tasks in April.
One of the actions is to get sponsored to wear the charity’s cheeky bum shorts for a day.
Charity collector Bill Lord, from Bentley Heath, was 48 when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
He said it was a total shock: “But I got the all clear and it has totally changed my outlook on life. Now I feel it’s really important to raise awareness of bowel cancer.”
Bill, now 53, said: "While receiving treatment for bowel cancer Beating Bowel Cancer was always there for me, especially on the dark days when all I needed was someone to talk to who understood my feelings, either one of the nurses or just to use the patient forum.
"Every little bit of the way the charity was there for me. It also provided useful written information that explains every aspect of the treatment you receive."
Sajedah Patel from Beating Bowel Cancer said: “Our volunteers have done a brilliant job in raising so much money especially over the Easter weekend and to brave such chilly weather!
“We’re very grateful to Coventry City for helping us raise such a significant amount. The money will help support more patients and their families who live with bowel cancer and get more people to talk openly about the symptoms of bowel cancer.”
Coventry City’s Stacie McDermott said: “It was fantastic to see fans giving so generously to Beating Bowel Cancer. One in four people at the match will have been touched in some way by the disease – either directly or through friends and families.”
Beating Bowel Cancer is keen to hear from anyone willing to help out – if just for one or two hours - with other events.
