Coventry City midfielder Ben Stevenson spoke exclusively to match-day programme PUSB shortly before the season ended.
Now that the club have confirmed Stevenson has agreed terms for his professional deal, we thought we'd relive the interview so Sky Blues fans can get an insight into the latest crop of talents emerging from the Academy - starting with the midfielder who has been with the club for ten years!
How did you feel when you were offered a pro deal?
I was really nervous as I don’t think I’ve had the best season to be honest. But it was incredible when I was told I had the pro deal, I was really proud.
How long have you been at the club and how did joining the Academy come about?
I was eight years old and in a tournament with George, I was scouted from there. I’ve been here ten years and despite being from Leicester, I really feel at home here.
Who have been influential figures on your career?
I’ve had good coaches, but my Mum! She’s been through a lot and living in Leicester while working and dropping me off she has shown great commitment. I can’t thank her enough.
How would you describe yourself as a player to fans who maybe don’t know much about you?
I’d say I’m a technical player. Obviously I’m not comparing myself to him on ability but I’m similar to Carrick, a sitter who likes to pass it around. I need to learn to be more of a leader but I think with more experience that will come. I like to get the ball in the middle of the pitch and try to dictate the play.
What has your year been like?
It’s not gone as well as I thought it would to be honest. I’ve been injured and I’ve had some down moments, but there are things like the FA Youth Cup, scoring at a stadium and things like that have given me a massive insight. But obviously getting a pro deal I was so relieved, the injuries have hit me hard this year but I've had to show that I can bounce back, hopefully it will mean I can be at my best next season.
What are your goals for next year?
I just want to play football so I’ll get my head down, keep working hard and improving and see where it takes me. I want to break through when I’m ready and impress if that chance comes.
