The Sky Blues midfielder also reveals how he has worked on the grittier side of the game to make himself a more accomplished player...

Coventry City midfielder Adam Barton believes the players have responded well to Tony Mowbray's appointment as manager.

Mowbray took his first session as manager yesterday ahead of the Port Vale game on Saturday.

Barton admitted that he was happy to see Mowbray appointed as he thinks the manager is exactly what the Sky Blues need to help them keep their place in League One.

"As you can imagine it was a good response from the players when the manager came here," Barton said.

"He's very experienced and successful. For Tony Mowbray to come to a League One club, particularly where we are is fantastic for us.

"He expressed how much he wanted to play football and get it down. That suits me, there are differences and the changes will come eventually. You can't change things massively straight away but we're all positive about things.

"For me I have to prove to him what I can do. It's alright for people to say things to the new manager but you've got to keep that idea in his head and make sure he thinks you're better than he originally thought."

The Sky Blues midfielder has returned to the first-team of late, starting the last five consecutive league games.

But Barton has admitted he has had to build on his game, working on the tougher defensive attributes particularly to keep his place.

While the midfielder is eager to keep his spot in the team and work hard on the dirtier side of the game, he is aware that results must come first with the club's current standing in the league.

He added: "When I first came here at 21, I wasn't that kind of player. I've developed a method to get myself more aggressive in the middle, I don't slap myself around the face or anything like that! I just go into the game with a more positive and aggressive mindset. I'm calm and relaxed, credit to Steven Pressley for helping me try to get that side out.

"People might look at me and think he's tall, he should use his body well and should be a good header of the ball. But why shouldn't someone be a good passer if their 6ft 4, you have to work on qualities you don't have but I have worked hard. Me and Flecky have worked on that as a partnership.

"I've had to adapt my game. Football isn't always pretty as Tuesday night has shown.

"If we can get a couple of wins I think we can go on a run, the team comes first. The performance against MK Dons showed we all want to do it, dig in and show the fans we do care and we want to win. We want to show the fans again that we do care at the Ricoh this weekend."
