"Taking chances has been our downfall for the past year, once we start taking them we'll be fine." Coventry City's Aaron Martin

The Sky Blues defender is also pleased with the signing of Adam Armstrong...

Coventry City defender Aaron Martin has expressed his faith that once the side start taking their chances they will be a good proposition in League One this season.

The 25-year old, while disappointed with the defeat to Cambridge United last night, believes there were encouraging signs on display and maintains the side will only continue to get better as they learn under manager Tony Mowbray.

"I thought we kept the ball well at times and created chances," Martin said.

"We’re disappointed with the goal but I think if we keep working like we have we should be fine.

“We're more focussed on how the gaffer wants us to play, we’re getting used to it and each day we’re getting more and more used to the ideas. We had a lot of opportunities and we didn't take
them again, it really has been a downfall of ours over the last year or so.

“Once we start taking them everyone will realise how good a side we are and we have to keep playing and trusting in it.”

Martin believes that taking those chances will come a lot more regularly throughout the season with new signing Adam Armstrong and midfielders James Maddison and Ruben Lameiras all vying for a starting place.

He added:  “We’re a very skilful side. You saw that against Cambridge, Madders and Ruben use their bodies so well and zip around the pitch.

“They’ll be massive for us this season, we need to keep giving them the ball and take our chances.

“Adam Armstrong is a definite boost, the gaffer said about bringing in a few strikers to give us a few different options. It’s a good signing and we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
