Coventry City have signed Newcastle United defender Jamie Sterry on a standard loan agreement until January 2017.

The 20-year-old, who plays predominantly at right fullback, began his career in the Northeast and progressed through the academy system, signing his first professional contract in July 2015.

Sterry made his Premier League debut in May 2016, coming on as a second-half substitute during the 5-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The 5ft 11' defender featured for Toon in their recent EFL Cup victory against Cheltenham Town, playing 90 minutes, as the Magpies ran out 2-0 winners.

Coventry City Manager, Tony Mowbray said: “I’m pleased to add another defender to the ranks as we welcome Jamie Sterry to the club. We’ve got a good relationship with Newcastle United and Jamie is the latest player we’ve taken from the North East to strengthen our squad.

“He is only 20, but is a young talent with plenty of promise and will provide healthy competition in the wing-back position for us. Jamie made his debut for Newcastle in the Premier League last season and I’m sure he will be a valuable addition to our squad for this campaign.”
