Despite a midweek loss to Bury, the Sky Blues boss has insisted that his squad need to remain a ‘fighting force’ in the battle against relegation.
City travel to Shrewsbury Town tomorrow, with the hosts winning four of their six February fixtures in League One, and now sit in a comfortable 16th place.
Russell Slade said: “I think Tuesday’s performance epitomised our season, we played particularly well for 25 minutes and put Bury under pressure, but we aren’t hitting those highs consistently.
“I’ve said before, it is a decent group of people here. In terms of where they are with their football development, or their understanding of the game, and consistently hitting the levels that are required, it has been an issue.
“It is relentless in this league, of course, as you’re losing games and you find yourselves in this position, dealing with the disappointment of losing football matches.
“Sometimes we’ve got the basics wrong, we don’t pay enough attention or value them as much as we ought to. The football club needs to improve and try to build something, not just for now, but for the future.”
In contrast, the Sky Blues have managed just one league win since the turn of the year, and sit afoot of the standings, with 12 games to go.
Slade added: “Obviously there is an air of disappointment, however they are working at it on a daily basis. We remain a fighting force.
“The fans, over a number of years, have been disillusioned and it must be frustrating for them. I feel that disappointment, I see that every day. I’m working exceptionally hard to try and turn things around for the football club, that is my job, that is my responsibility.
“You can’t do it overnight. You can’t rebuild in a short space of time. It can be done, but you need the tools to achieve that. And that goes throughout the football club, there needs to be a stringent review at the end of the season.”
