MATCH REPORT: Newport County 0-2 Coventry City - George Thomas nets again as City claim victory in Wales

23 July 2016

The Sky Blues claim their third victory of the pre-season period, ahead of the Norwich City fixture on Tuesday...

George Thomas and Jordan Willis both score for the Sky Blues in a convincing 2-0 victory over League Two side Newport County in south Wales.

Marcus Tudgay captained the team, with City again fielding a mixture of youth and experienced players in a 3-4-3 formation. Devon Kelly-Evans had two chances in the final ten minutes to give City a three nil advantage and struck the woodwork with the second opportunity, having linked up well with substitute Kyle Spence.

In a fairly lacklustre first-half, George Thomas provided the only goal of the opening 45 as he combined with fellow forward Marvin Sordell and slotted the ball beneath Joe Day in the Newport goal. The breakthrough came in the 43rd minute as Sordell slipped a clever through ball in to the path of Thomas and the Welshman rounded off the move with a low side-foot finish.

Vladimir Gadzhev also had a couple of first-half glimpses at goal, but the game was reduced to half chances in the main, with Newport's trialist Marlon Jackson coming closest for the home side. Dion Kelly-Evans may have had a legitimate penalty claim (in fact, two), but both were inconspicuously waved away by the referee.

City dominated after the break, with Jordan Willis doubling the away sides lead ten minutes in. Andy Rose kept the ball alive at the backstick as his header kissed the crossbar, then Sordell found Willis unmarked in the 6-yard area for a tap in.

The Sky Blues elected to make a host of changes in the second-half, as the lively Kyle Spence entered the action among others. Devon Kelly-Evans had the chance to seal it at the death, as the 19-year old Academy graduate found himself one on one with the Newport keeper. With the ball bouncing up, Kelly-Evans hit it on the half volley but skewed his shot over the crossbar.
