Mark Venus reflect's on a disappointing afternoon for the Sky Blues after defeat at the Ricoh...

Mark Venus believes his side have to start being more productive in the final third after defeat against Milton Keynes Dons at the Ricoh.

Ed Upson scored twice, either side of a Ben Stevenson wondergoal, but it was a red card for the City midfielder that seemingly changed the game just after the hour mark.

The Sky Blues seemed in firm control for large periods of the game, but once against struggled to turn their authority into goals. Venus said: “I think we put a lot of effort in the game and competed really well to get into some good positions, but we didn’t test their ‘keeper enough.

“Scoring goals has been a problem for the last twenty or so games and unless we change in that aspect we’re not going to improve. I think we put them under pressure and were the team on the front foot.

“We had the most threatening positions, but as far as literal goal mouth action they probably scored with their first attack and couldn’t take advantage of good positions.”

The Sky Blues are on a disappointing run of form, but Venus is adamant his side need to continue to work hard and not get downhearted heading into a hectic period of fixtures.

City travel to Cambridge in the FA Cup second round before hosting Crawley Town in the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy.

“We’re still in both cup competitions so we have to look towards those now. We’ve picked up a few points over the last ten games, but it’s nowhere near enough.

“There have been a few lows recently, after a couple of highs before that, but that is football. You get judged by everybody and that is understandable in the position we are,”

He added: “I’m not downhearted. This is a big football club and we’ve got to keep going, we’ve got to get some more points on the board and get away from the bottom of the league.”
