Coventry City were eliminated from the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on penalties 4-3 against Yeovil Town at Huish Park.

The Sky Blues were held 0-0 and the game went straight to penalties as per Johnstone's Paint Trophy rules. Lateef Elford-Alliyu and Sam Ricketts were the unfortunate City players to miss as the Sky Blues went out in the second round.

Tony Mowbray made six changes from the weekend win over Shrewsbury Town with Conor Thomas and Ryan Haynes making their first starts of the season.

The Sky Blues dominated the first-half and went closest on 25 minutes, when Jacob Murphy did well to beat his man on the left and his cross deflected into the path of John Fleck who smashed a vicious effort from 20-yards inches wide of the left post.

Marcus Tudgay should have given City the lead just before the 40 minute mark, when he met Thomas' low cross but it was a snap shot from the frontman from six-yards which was straight at goalkeeper Arthur Kyrsiak.

Those were City's two best chances of the opening 45 and they continued to dominate the ball in the second period.

George Thomas came on ten minutes after the interval to replace Ruben Lameiras but the hosts had the first real chance of the half just after the hour mark from a stray back pass, but Reice Charles-Cook was sharp off his line to thwart Ryan Bird in the area.

Straight up the other end, Tudgay had a chance of his own when George Thomas hit a speculative effort from 25-yards which Kyrsiak parried and the veteran striker was first to the ball in the area but from a tight angle, hit the side netting.

Charles-Cook was called upon again shortly after as he made a great stop to deny Connor Roberts, who raced in one-on-one on the right but the keeper was sharp once again stood up well to deny the midfielder at the near post.

Ivor Lawton was then given his senior debut with 15 minutes to go as he replaced Conor Thomas and Elford-Alliyu made his first Sky Blues appearance coming on with six minutes to play for Jim O'Brien.

But it went straight to spot kicks after a 0-0 draw and Marcus Tudgay gave the Sky Blues the lead in the shoot-out.

Ryan Dickson equalised, before Elford-Alliyu's spot kick to the right was well saved. Town netted before Murphy scored his penalty, before successful spot-kicks from Howells, George Thomas and Marc Laird.

That meant Sam Ricketts had to score, but his effort forced a great save by Krysiak to condemn City to Johnstone's Paint Trophy elimination.
