Make a claim for the armband

25 October 2012

Mark Robins has issued a challenge to the squad for the skippers position...

Coventry City manager Mark Robins wants his players to make a claim for the captain’s armband on a permanent basis.

Since Robins joined Coventry City, Carl Baker has taken the responsibility as club skipper until the Brentford match this week when Richard Wood was assigned the role.

The weekend’s trip to Leyton Orient will give Robins another chance to assess his options and he has issued a challenge to the entire squad to make their claim for the armband.

The City boss said: “It was interesting during the Notts County game when I brought Carl (Baker) off, who they actually gave the armband to.

“That was an indication of what the players think. However, at the moment I haven’t got a fixed captain in my mind.

“I think Carl has done a terrific job and it has helped him to develop his game this season. We will see as I haven’t got an absolute skipper in my mind.

“We will look at it over a period of time because you are looking for someone to step up and make their claim for the position.

“Whether the captain is in the building at the moment or we bring him in later, who’s to say. But like I say, the one’s who have had it have done a good job.

“The captain will show his head, hopefully sooner rather than later.”

The squad had a double training session today as Robins looks to get Coventry back on track after two consecutive defeats.

Despite the recent results, Robins is confident the players have what it takes to claim up the League One table.

He added: “We are now 13 games in and we need to pick more points up. We know that and of course the supporters know that.

“I am a really bad loser so hopefully the players can emulate that. We have to go out and play and perform in front of our supporters who have been incredible this season.

“We have to give them something to hang on to, something to cheer about and actually enjoy. That is what the players have to work towards and they will get it right.

“They have to work hard and they will be back out there this afternoon for a double session because they need it.

“I hope we can go to Orient and get the ultimate reward. It needs hard work and endeavor, and that’s what I’ll be looking for.”
