McGoldrick sought Best and Cranie advice

City's new signing spoke to former players before sealing the deal...

Coventry City's transfer deadline signing David McGoldrick revealed he spoke to former players Leon Best and Martin Cranie before joining City.

The Forest loanee joined the club on a loan deal until January to help bolster City's attacking options for the League One season.

McGoldrick hopes to get regular first-team football at the club and says he spoke to his former Southampton teammates, Cranie and Best, to see if it was a good move for him.

The 24-year old said: "Coventry have been really unlucky so far this season but when you see the quality of the players the club has, it was an easy choice to make for me coming here.

"I want first-team football and it was difficult to get into the team at Forest because of the six different strikers they had.

"I had known about the interest from Coventry for a while and I was always keen on the move so I was happy to get it done.

"Before moving here, I spoke to Leon Best and Martin Cranie, who were with me at Southampton, and they could only recommend the club.

"Told me great things and City shouldn't be in League One and I am happy to be here helping the club get out of the league."

McGoldrick made his City debut as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 loss at Crewe Alexandra with Max Clayton netting the only goal.

With Cody McDonald, Stephen Elliott, Callum Ball and Roy O'Donovan already at the club, McGoldrick knows it will be difficult to get into the starting XI.

He added: "The club has a lot of quality across the park and up front, there are some really good strikers here.

"I know it will be difficult to get into the side and Richard Shaw told me that when I signed. But that is part of being a footballer and I like the challenge.

"I'm hoping I can use my opportunities well and impress the management team here. I want to make a positive impact here and do my best for the club."
