The Under-18's coach was full of praise for his side after the 4-3 win last night
Coventry City Under-18’s coach Ian Foster was delighted to see his side progress in the FA Youth Cup after the 4-3 win over Shrewsbury Town at the Ricoh Arena.
In an entertaining night watched by a good crowd, City went into a commanding 2-0 lead at the break with goals from Jack Finch and a long range effort from Louis Garner.
Shrewsbury came back into the game a minute after the break through George Carpenter but captain Ricky Fletcher reinstated the two-goal lead five minutes later.
The Sky Blues secured their passage into the second round of the FA Youth Cup after Warren Holmes bundled Courtney Baker-Richardson’s shot into his own net.
The Shrews rallied towards the end and scored two goals late on but Foster was impressed with the performance from the young side.
Foster said: “It is a proud moment for them to play in the Ricoh Arena and get a win like that. They put in a decent performance and scored four goals so we are happy to progress.
“We are delighted we can score that many goals in the game. You can see offensively we are a threat and the front three caused them problems all night.
“If we can get the other end sorted out and keep a few clean sheets, we would be delighted. You’ve got to give credit to Shrewsbury as they kept going and we are probably a little disappointed with the manner we conceded the goals.
“I think all the goals we conceded were preventable but we have won and we will enjoy the night and pick the bones out of it when we have our meeting in the morning.
“I have been here seven weeks now and that is the third 4-3 we’ve been involved in. But overall, the players can be proud of their performance and we have all enjoyed the night.”
The young side travel to Yorkshire on Saturday to face Leeds United and Foster believes progression in the cup will give the players plenty of confidence going into the weekend’s game.
He added: “It is a wonderful opportunity to go up to Leeds and show what we can do off the back of this result. The players will be lifted by what they have done tonight and I’m sure they will already be looking forward to the next game.
“It is a great place to go against a very difficult side but a confident side can always get a result anywhere.
“As long as Lee Carsley (Under-21’s coach) stops nicking my players, I’m sure we’ll be alright.”
