Fleck on wonder goal

4 August 2012

City midfielder on his strike at Accrington and his high hopes for the new season

Sky Blues midfielder John Fleck has revealed he has title ambitions after his brace helped Coventry win 4-1 at Accrington Stanley.

Andy Thorn's side recorded a dominent win at the Crown Ground with Fleck grabbing two goals including an exquisite lob over Stanley keeper Ian Dunbavin from 40 yards.

The 20-year old, who scored his first goal from the penalty spot and now takes his pre-season tally to five, hopes he can continue to improve ahead of the 2012/13 League One season.

Fleck said: "It's always good to score a goal like that. I just saw him come off his line and thought I had to go for it. Very happy with it and hopefully I score a few more like that next season.

"Really looking forward to it and it was important we got it right after the result on Tuesday. We've lost a few games recently and it does a lot for the confidence to win, whoever the opposition.

"It wasn't a great dressing room after the game on Tuesday. But in a way, better we play like that now than during the season, when it matters.

"Most important thing is that we are scoring goals and playing well. A lot of work to do and hopefully we can continue to improve."

Cody McDonald also scored a brace in Lancashire in what was the perfect response to the defeat at Wrexham on Tuesday.

The Sky Blues start their League One season two weeks today at Yeovil Town and Fleck hopes that will be the beginning of their title challenge.

He added: "I think winning the title is what it is all about. I think we have enough quality here to really mount a good challenge and we will definitely be up there.

"Obviously it takes time for all the new players to gel into the team but hopefully these pre-season games can speed up the process. The more games which come, the better we will become.

"We need to keep clean sheets and score plenty of goals and if we can do that we have a great chance of winning the league.

"The most important thing for me is to win the league and I am sure that is the same with almost everyone else at the club.

"I will just work as hard as I can and see what I can do."
