Edjenguele not dwelling on cup win

29 August 2012

City defender already has his sights set on a starting place against Crewe on Saturday

Sky Blues defender William Edjenguele was delighted to make his Ricoh Arena debut in the 3-2 win over Birmingham City.

The French defender moved to the club during the summer on a free transfer after leaving Greek Superleague club Panetolikos F.C.

Having not made a competitive first team appearance for the club so far, caretaker boss Richard Shaw gave the 25-year old his competitive debut in the Capitol One Cup.

The defender was one of the star performers on the night and said he enjoyed every minute of his debut in English football.

Edjenguele said: “It was fantastic. To start my Coventry career in a local derby like that in front of the home fans, it was just fantastic and I’m so happy to play my first game in England.

“With it being in the Cup as well, it means quite a lot to me and the players as it is a good competition. The atmosphere was great and with Birmingham also bringing a lot of fans, it really was a great occasion.

“This is just the beginning for me and hopefully I can continue to play for the club in the first team. There are a lot of games this season and I want to play in all of them.

“We did well to come back from behind and it did a lot for our confidence. When you play in football, it is atmosphere’s like that which make you happy that you play in the game.”

The 25-year old had to control former Sky Blues striker Marlon King all night and did well to keep the striker quiet for the majority of the game.

Despite the great performance, Edjenguele already has his sights on the weekend’s League One clash against Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road.

He added: “I am really happy about the game but we will need to refocus as it is a really important game on Saturday and I want to play in it.

“Every game is a big game for us at the moment so we need to make sure we recover well from tonight. Tonight will be really important for our morale going into the weekend’s game.

“Also, we may be hurting after that but because we won, I am sure we will forget the aches and pains pretty quickly and look forward to Crewe.”
