'I didn't think I was coming on.'

Adam Barton delighted to score with his first touch of the game...

Coventry City midfielder Adam Barton hopes his goal against Hartlepool United will improve his chances of breaking into Mark Robins' starting XI.

The former Preston North End midfielder came on at Victoria Park late on for James Bailey and after a Blair Adams cross was only half-cleared, Barton drilled home for City's fifth and final goal of the game with his first touch of the game.

Barton praised the performance of the entire team and says he knows he will have to be patient to break into the side.

The 21-year old said: "Ideally, my favourite position is just behind the striker as that's where I played in the Championship with Preston, and I think I am best suited to that role.

"However, we have got a very big squad at the moment with a lot of very good players in that area I want to play. You saw today, with four different goalscorers, there is ability to get goals from all over the pitch.

"I will have to be patient but when I get my chance on the pitch, it is important I use it to impress the manager as that can only help my chances.

"On the performance, I think we did well in the first half without getting any reward for it. You come to these sort of places in League One and you always want to play and pass it around. Sometimes though, you have to settle with the other side of the game.

"But in the second half, they opened up a lot more for us and we were able to take advantage of that through some very confident football by us."

Captain Carl Baker grabbed an impressive brace whilst Franck Moussa, David McGoldrick and Barton added the other goals in an emphatic away win for the Sky Blues.

Coventry scored three goals in eight minutes at the start of the second half and Barton thought it meant he wouldn't get on.

He added: "I am delighted to get on in the first place and then to score with my first touch is even better. The manager told me to warm up at the beginning of the second half but then we got three goals and I thought I wouldn't be coming on.

"But I did get on and he told me to get on the ball and control the game. My first touch was a goal and you can't be much happier than that.

"It was a really good performance from everybody and the confidence has definitely been lifted. Our away form has actually been quite good so we are looking forward to going down to Colchester and hopefully we can get another three points there."
